purely as a lap timer no,only real difference is you can download your data over wifi rather than a usb connection,if using as a logger then there are quite a few differnces but you'd ideally be going for the DL version then anyway. the best thing about the mk1 is the battery lasts a lot longer than the mk2 (solo2),so for just a lap timer,this is actually better.
