We are now authorized Attack Performance retailers.
AP are a big name in the USA, producing rearsets, yokes, Clip ons & paddock stand pick-ups.

We havent managed to add there products to our site yet so please contact us with your requirements.
Parts for most sports bikes.

They are works of art. Why are rearsets always so expensive though, Nearly always over £300. when they're only machined like many other things that cost much less. Genuine question that too. Do their designs require special machining or something?

No special machining "just" cnc machining centre. Trouble is someone has had to invest in that and charge out at a cost make a ROI.
 
Take the Hanger plate.
 
Time to measure and draw - 1day @ £400.00
Time to Program - 1 hr @ £50
Material - £1.00
Base on a batch of 100off
Material =£100
Draw and prog £450
Machine time each = 5mins x 100 = 500mins + set up 45mins = 545mins
De burr batch time 60mins
Inspect 60mins
545 + 60 + 60 = 665mins divide by 60 = 11hrs 5 mins x £45 hr = £495.00 plus £451.00 = £946.00 = £1016.00
Plus andodise @ £70.00 batch = £1086.00
Plus £ 30.00 transport = £1116.00
 
Divide by 100 = £11.16 each cost
Machinist wants 60% on top = £17.86
Reatailer wants 100% =£35.72 each retail price to you the customer.
 
Or buy in from China for 30% of the manufacturing cost pay some import duty and make 120% on top.
 
I'm out of touch with modern cnc program software but I know it's a hell of a lot quicker than when I used to do it.
 
The above isn't exact but if you work the parts out across the assembly you can see where the costs come in.
 
You also have to realise some of the parts are model specific and some are common across all models so batch sizes will be higher and the part will have a longer life.
 
The manufacturer has to work out how long a life his product may have in the market and how manyhe is likely to sell.

Interesting breakdown.
You did however forget to add the cost of equipment, purchase of somewhere to put the equipment, rates, heating and lighting bills, bank charges on the interest for the loan to buy all the equipment and on and on.
Then should you be lucky enough to sell at a profit the bloody taxman wants his pound of Titanium off you.

Theres a guy near me make rearsets from his mums garage.  He charges £550 upwards for a set!

All that said they are a work of art and I love em on my Daytona.  Problem is everytime I load her in the van I catch my leg on the pegs and always manage to rip my jeans on the sharp pegs!  But they grip when it counts and thats all that matters.

Yes the Retailer costs were not broken down the above was more to highlight the engineering costs.  Which also contain things like training courses, health and safety, enviromental waste costs etc,etc. It's a wonder anyone ever sets up in business!!
Unfortunately Motorcycle race parts are pretty low volume when compared to some like a company making say replacement standard car brake discs where they would expect much higher volume.

Hi Lee, I will have to check with AP as to if they cover those sizes on the ZX.  I know they do for the Ducati range so fingers crossed.  What yokes do you have on at the moment?
