I have had a problem with my Dunlop GP211 racers with the rear tearing, I am getting my suspension set up for me but I believe this is a common problem with the Dunlop, was at Brands Wednesday this week and saw some Dunlops there the same. Might be looking to change to something else so would be interested in some more info. Ive got an 05 R1. Steve |
Yep, an all too familiar story I'm afraid. Don't get me wrong, Dunlop's are excellent tyres in general, but, they do have this recurring tearing problem which we're seeing more frequently these days.
However, the Continental are certainly available for your R1 as they make a 190/55X17 rear. The recommendation is to go for an endurance rear and medium front, to give the optimum response from the tyres. A pair of these are very inexpensive at only £255. I am very impressed with them and would strongly suggest trying them.
Pressure would need to be set depending on your weight, group, use of warmers, etc. But, we can go through it all with you as and when you're using them. |
That sounds interesting, I ran the new Avons on a rented R6 on Sat at Snetterton and they were brilliant as well, it seems tyre manufacturers are finally making some really good tyres for us peeps. I thought the Dunlops were brilliant except for the tearing. I had previously ran Pirelli SuperCorsa's and didnt have the tearing issue but I was not circulating quite so fast then. I reckon I have 1 more track day left in the GP211 racer rear and then I will look to change. Cheers for the info. |
No worries Steve, give me a shout if I can be of any help at all. |
Ok mate will do. |
Hi I am at Snetterton with FE on 13th May then at Brands with FE on 18th June, are you at either of these events? After that I will be at the TDR bash, will you be there as I will definitely need new tyres for that!

My riding is irrelevant as I haven't made bold claims about new tyres.I would have thought a novice racer would be improving quite quickly anyway so to throw new tyres into the mix and claim they are the reason for the improvement is rather naive. If on the other hand the rider has done a few thousand laps of Cadwell on the same bike and tyres, has got a setting he is comfortable with and reduced his laptimes as low as he can then tries the tyres and goes quicker that the improvement would be more meaningful. Thats not too hard to understand is it? By the way I wouldn't want to be Stoner,I drink too much milk to give it up.

Hi Steve, I'm not sure yet mate as we're still trying to finalise dates and confirm bookings. This month seems all over the place for some reason. But, I'll let you know as soon as I have confirmation from the tdo's.

Right then, let's clear this up once and for all.
I know I have come across as rude and surly on this subject and for that I apologise. However, there's a lot of assumptions that I know who some of the people who have commented are and I should be aware that they ride bikes fast round tracks, which I obviously don't. I do know tyres and I am merely trying to let you all know that these established tyres are now being made available in the UK. Whether you choose to try them or not is purely down to you and it really makes absolutely no difference to me in any way, shape or form if you decide to stick with what you currently use or give these a try, I really am not fussed either way. I can see that it comes across that I am trying to push these tyres because I'm going to make a fat profit out of them - this is absolutely NOT the case, we make the same small margin out of every tyre that we sell and we work on volume sales as the margins are so tight. I know others in the industry will support this statement too.
Also, there seems to be a big emphasis on "racing" on here, when the majority of people are trackday riders (as in the site's name) and do this as a hobby and an escape from their usual jobs. So, when people start going on about lap times this and race credentials that, it does tend to start clouding the issue. But, on the other hand, I do stick by my comments and say that the guy racing his R6 likes these tyres, has been riding on road and track for a very long time and is now breaking into a bit of club racing, with the help and support of Phil Crowe; who I guess nobody will slate for his riding ability? Phil likes these tyres and will only not use them as he's sponsored by HMT and Bridgestone - fair enough. But, he's said he'll see how they do and will give an honest opinion, the first of which was that they were working very nicely and were doing what was expected of a fast track/race tyre - again, fair enough. I've taken his comments on board, fed them back to Continental and they are happy with that. They don't expect their tyres to be all things to all men, but, would like people to give them an honest try before passing judgement, you can't ask for more than that really, can you?
So, in essence, what I am trying to say is, firstly I apologise for being a grumpy old git, and secondly, I'll gladly talk to you and help you choose whatever tyres you like and will happily sell you the best tyres for you at the best prices I can do them for, irrespective of whether they're Continentals or any of the other manufacturers tyres.
Cheers all, thanks for reading my ramblings and I hope this means it's all peace and love again.

Just a note as I realise I havent posted on here since riding with them. I put these on for the first time for Qualifying in the Rookie MiniTwins at Brands and they got me a 6th (in a field of 20) and a finish of 7th in the first race.
I then hit on a few suspension issues and realised I needed to change things at the rear and not having a clue about suspension I got a little tearing around Clearways (as we all know this happens on all brands of tyres). I have no doubt as to it being a suspension issue rather than tyre and I will definately run these again but alas as anyone who races knows you dont really have the time to do it in a race enviroment. These are good tyres and for the vast, vast majority of people on here I have no hesitation in saying they are more than a match for the more widely used brands

Hi Jacko, I'm just waiting for the amended prices to come through on the soft and medium compounds. But, the endurance compounded (which are more like a medium/hard compound) are £245.00 per pair. Let me know what group you normally run in and I'll tell you what I think would suit you best. Whereabouts in Lincs are you? We're down in Spalding if that's any good to you to pay us a visit, have a brew and get them fitted here.

Obviously Phil Crowe won't have just gone out and gone mental on them, so can't expect him to beat any PB's or anything, but did he have any times that he rode on the Conti's? I guess his suspension would need time to be set up for the tyres etc to really see what he could do on them, but initially he was impressed?

Phil didn't ride on them. As I said, he uses Bridgestone's as he's sponsored by them. But, he knows Dean very well and has been mentoring him and watching what the tyres were doing. His initial scepticism was quashed once he saw what the tyres were doing. I still need to convince him to try a set though.

I'm all for trying new tyres as at my pace, the contributing factor is myself and not my tyres. I currently run r10s coming from pirelli supercorsa sc1/sc2 combos.
However, since I mentioned that more speed will come from improving my riding instead of from tyres, then the sole and only factor for choosing a tyre is price (obviously not to the point they are made of ice), then these don't seem to be very attractive.
As I said, I am open to all new tyres but if I got my supercorsas for 225 fitted, and my r10s for 210 fitted at trackdays with no pre-ordering, you can see why i'll be reluctant to try tyres that cost 245 a pair.
And as you know, us trackdayers and racers alike go with whoever is cheapest and has the best deals available. This also might explain some of the comments you have been getting.
If you could do a price match, then I'm sure we'll all flock to your services. Just a though:)

Ok guys, if you could bear with me for a day or two as I'm still trying to sort out everything from being away. But, I'm still waiting for the new prices to come through on the soft and medium compounds. As soon as I have them, I will post up a price for them based on a "bulk buy" of a minimum of 10 sets.

Right then, as per the PM's I got, I have worked out a bulk buy price on the Continental's for you lot. These prices are for a MINIMUM of 10 pairs and are for collection only. However, as it's for TDR, if anyone wanted them fitting to loose wheels, I'd only charge an additional £5 per wheel, including balancing.
If you want them posting out, it's £18 per pair. But, I can meet you at tracks and would happily deliver/fit at the TDR bash at Cadwell as it's local to me.
Payment would have to be by direct transfer, PayPal only as a gift or in cash. I've cut these prices to the bare bones and I couldn't afford to then have card charges to pay on top, I'm sure you understand - thank you.
So, the prices are as follows:-
120/70X17 & 160/60X17 Continental Race Attack Comp Endurance £205.00 per pair 120/70X17 & 180/55X17 Continental Race Attack Comp Endurance £220.00 per pair 120/70X17 & 190/55X17 Continental Race Attack Comp Endurance £225.00 per pair
The Comp Endurance are the closest compounds to the Bridgestone R10 Type 3 front and Type 2 rear. The Conti Endurance is more of a medium/hard than a full on endurance tyre.
However, if you're a racer and want softer tyres, then I can do the following:-
120/70X17 & 160/60X17 Continental Race Attack Soft Front & Medium Rear £230.00 per pair 120/70X17 & 180/55X17 Continental Race Attack Soft Front & Medium Rear £240.00 per pair 120/70X17 & 190/55X17 Continental Race Attack Soft Front & Medium Rear £250.00 per pair

Just a quick update on this, I've now managed to get a decent price for couriers. A 48 hour service will be £10 per pair, as opposed to the £18 for a week and a half I was quoted before!!! So, this makes these an even more attractive proposition.

Hi I am at Snetterton with FE on 13th May then at Brands with FE on 18th June, are you at either of these events? After that I will be at the TDR bash, will you be there as I will definitely need new tyres for that!

Hi Steve, I'm not sure yet mate as we're still trying to finalise dates and confirm bookings. This month seems all over the place for some reason. But, I'll let you know as soon as I have confirmation from the tdo's. |
Hi Stef I now have a set of the Conti's from you, my mate Skidmark picked them up from you at Brands recently and he had some Power One's. My question is should I use my tyre warmers, do I use the warmers just to keep some heat in the tyres that is generated by use only or do I plug the warmers in to get to 80 degrees and what pressures should I run on front and rear cold and hot, I run mainly in the fast group and have a fist of ham for throttle control!! Cheers Steve
